British Columbia launched the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) in 1998 to reduce road accidents and help new drivers develop strong, safe driving skills. This GST-free program offers valuable benefits, including:
Six-month Novice license reduction upon successful completion
Two high school credits for eligible students
Our highly trusted driver education program is designed to prepare you for both road tests and the challenges of BC’s evolving and often congested roads.
Getting your first license is exciting, and we’re here to help every step of the way. From quizzes and apps to proven tips and training, we’ll help you succeed. You’ll gain both the skills and attitudes needed to become a safe and confident driver.
The GLP helps you gradually build your experience—starting with supervision, and eventually driving solo.
You can apply once you turn 16.
Requirements:
Parental consent if under 19
Pass the knowledge test at an ICBC driver licensing office
Pass a vision screening
After at least one year of supervised driving, you’re eligible for your first road test.
To qualify:
Practice with a qualified supervisor for 12 months
Book and pass the Class 7 Road Test
After 24 months of safe driving with no prohibitions, or just 18 months if you completed an ICBC-approved driving course during your L stage, you can apply for your full license.
To complete this stage:
Book and pass the Class 5 Road Test
No more L or N signs or GLP restrictions!
